Something changed tonight. I hung some fish. I have about 50 at home and chose to hang four. The first one I picked up wasn’t blue or green but lilac, I think a mixture of two glazes. I think when I go to the studio next time I’ll glaze a purple batch, or batches intended to be purple. But for tonight, I listened to how they sounded as they hit against each other while listening to Phoebe Bridgers. I’m tired, but not of I Know The End and not of fish.
24 more fish
Exploring underglazes and what it adds to the finished fish.
Decided to make test tiles to explore different combinations. What underglazes might appear better under a transparent glaze.
These fish will also become more experimental since they’ve already been bisqued.
I’m also preparing some with wax resist to see what fun can occur.
I think someone used wax resist to create the beautiful decoration on this vase. Truly a magnificent thing to see in the studio.
Exploring
Not everything can be fish. Some things are collages with clay.
Damn these pics hit.
Sunfish
Sophie’s sunfish. She will defend Mola Mola. They aren’t colorful enough for me to defend, but I will learn about them.
Dana’s fish in sun. Test tiles came from the kiln and I love them. Pelegreeno and blue is most fish ready.
I made more fish yesterday and glazed some more today. I should be thinking of how to track fish but maybe later. I’ve been painting underglaze on reclaim bowls I find and decided to be more painterly with some of the underglaze on the fish. My earlier attempts to use underglaze on my fish haven’t been as loose as this one. I like the direction this is going.
You can find two sunfish in this photo.
And also in this one, as they have dorsal and pectoral fins instead of caudal fins.
I’m enjoying this process— the people I meet, how the fish change, how I explain the changes.
I also love pulling things from the reclaim because it feels like stealing, or how silly and inadvertently sexual throwing clay is, or how glazes interact and befuddle me. It’s all surprising and playful at the moment. It leads to beautiful things— like this bowl I gave to Emma.
We will end with a moody apple photo of this baddie.
Kiln haul
Made these ornaments for Millicent and Madeline. Jacob too I guess but he doesn’t scream Christmas.
I think Millie will say something about monetizing these and I’ll say something about capitalism. But damn they be beautiful.
Next some fish from the glaze kiln, quickly I’m over the combo of blue and gittas blue. Spent the night making test tile combinations (and recording what I did so I’m not a little bitch).
Something unknown happened with a flower bowl. Will sacrifice it to the classroom.
These excite me most. I’ve forgotten what I did for the glazes except that hideous one (I mixed pink and transparent). I imagine them on a wall, will have to ask Evi how she hung her fish.
I was trying to figure out how to collage with clay. They’re beautiful, I can’t get over them.
This guy obvi has chun glaze but I’m not sure which way he orients.
To end: proof of notetaking. Someday I’ll look back at this turning point in my artistic practice.
